If you cannot find your answer here, see the user manual (Japanese) or contact us (in English or Japanese).
ver 2.0.x runs on Windows 10 (21H2 or later) / 11 and Windows Server 2022 or later. It has been tested on Japanese and English versions of the OS. Because .NET Framework 4.8.1 is required, it does not run on Windows Server 2016 or 2019 (on the Roadmap, we are considering a form that does not require installing .NET, so that it can also run on 2016 and 2019).
We have tested it on Professional editions of client OSes and Standard editions of server OSes.
.NET Framework 4.8.1 is required.
Backups can be run without administrator rights. The initial setup, registering the app in Microsoft Entra ID, requires Microsoft 365 Global Administrator rights.
ver 2.0.1 and later connect with a certificate without using Azure ACS, so you can keep using them. ver 1.7.x and earlier use ACS and can no longer connect to SharePoint Online. Please update to the latest version.
Yes. However, only the default sites created by SharePoint (for example, https://mydomain.sharepoint.com/...) can be backed up, and a message is shown saying that there is no "SharePoint admin center".
Yes.
To back up Microsoft 365 data, it needs a network connection to Microsoft 365.
Just extract the ZIP file you downloaded and place it in any folder. Then complete the following initial setup by following the user manual.
No, it does not write to the registry.
Yes. On the old PC, release the license with "Config" → "Unregister", then delete EOB (keeping it on both PCs violates the license). Also check that the new PC meets the system requirements.
Release the license with "Config" → "Unregister", delete the app registered in Microsoft Entra ID (EOBAux), and then delete the whole EOB folder. For details, see Chapter 10: Uninstall (Japanese).
It is an application that backs up data in SharePoint Online as plain files to local storage (such as a PC disk) or shared folders (such as your file server or NAS). Nothing is converted into a special format, so the backed-up files open without dedicated software. OneDrive for Business (from ver 1.6.0) and Microsoft 365 groups (from ver 1.7.0) are also supported.
Under Microsoft's shared responsibility model, managing your data is the customer's responsibility in every type of cloud service. Items can be restored from the SharePoint Online recycle bin for only 93 days, and accidental overwrites or deletions, as well as encryption by ransomware, are synced straight to SharePoint and OneDrive. We recommend backing up important data to a place separate from Microsoft 365 as well.
Keeping backups in a place separate from Microsoft 365 (such as your file server or NAS) is one form of protection. Note, however, that EOB overwrites files in the same destination, so if encrypted files are backed up, the files in the destination are replaced as well.
If you register separate tasks with different destinations (for example, one folder per weekday), you can keep backups from different points in time side by side. Generation management and support for immutable destinations are under consideration on the Roadmap.
Professional Plus: all features are available.
Professional: OneDrive for Business and Microsoft 365 groups cannot be backed up.
Free: one site only, up to 10 MB per backup, and "Full (Overwrite)" backup mode only. Not covered by support.
For details, see Features by edition.
List contents are saved as they are in XML files. List attachments are saved as well.
The current EOB has no feature to restore to SharePoint. Retrieve the files you need from the backup and upload them to the SharePoint site. Files are saved in the same format as in SharePoint, so you can open and use them as they are without putting them back into SharePoint.
Restore to SharePoint is under consideration on the Roadmap.
Permission information set in SharePoint is not backed up.
No. It is for SharePoint Online (Microsoft 365) only.
Japanese and English are supported ("Config" → "Language" in the menu).
It depends on the environment and the network bandwidth. We recommend checking in your actual environment with a trial key. From ver 2.0.2, you can adjust speed and load with the number of parallel downloads (1–4).
EOB sets file timestamps based on the UTC date and time stored in SharePoint. If the time zone settings of the PC that ran the backup and of SharePoint differ, the displayed dates and times may differ.
If the same file exists in the destination with the same modified date, it is not saved. Files with a different modified date are overwritten.
They are data marked with the "Hidden" attribute in SharePoint's system settings. This comes from SharePoint's product specifications and is not a value that users set.
Yes. Select the sites and method to back up in the window, save them with "Config" → "Create a batch config file", and run EOBCmd.exe from Windows Task Scheduler. With automatic mode (/m), all sites that exist at run time are backed up. For details, see Chapter 8: Batch backup (Japanese).
No. You can specify a local drive or a shared folder on the network as the destination.
Not at the same time. Switch the settings for each tenant (domain) and back them up separately.
No, they cannot run at the same time.
Cancel works per file. If a file is being saved, processing stops after that file has been saved.
The Free Edition can back up one site only. To back up multiple sites, please use the Professional Edition or above.
Initial setup is required (creating a certificate, registering the app in Entra ID, and site settings in EOB). A connection test runs when you save in "Site Config"; if it fails, the tenant ID, client ID and certificate thumbprint are shown on screen. Check that they match the values in Entra ID. For details, see Chapter 5: Site settings (Japanese).
The certificate may have expired. Create a new certificate following Chapter 3 (Japanese) and register it in Entra ID following Chapter 4 (Japanese). You may delete the existing certificate or leave it.
We recommend a certificate validity period of 3 years or less (1 year or less for stricter operation).
The names may contain characters that cannot be used in SharePoint. Rename the folders or files in SharePoint.
If the destination path and file name together exceed 260 characters, select "Enable path name over 260 characters" (due to Windows specifications, you may not be able to work with them in File Explorer).
This can happen due to network disconnections or SharePoint throttling (congestion). From ver 2.0.2, EOB waits and retries automatically, and only files that still cannot be saved are skipped and recorded in the log. Please wait a while and run it again.
Error details are recorded in the EOBLogs folder (EOBLog_date-time.txt) in the same folder as EOB.exe.
ver 2.0.3 and earlier had a bug where list attachments were not saved. Please update to ver 2.0.4 or later (the latest version) and run the backup again.
It is sold by download only. You can start the purchase through the contact form (in Japanese; please write in English or Japanese). See also How to buy.
We issue a trial key that enables all features for a limited time (once per company). Please request it through the contact form.
It is the unit of environment where EOB runs. Virtual environments (virtual machines, Remote Desktop and so on) also count as one device each.
No, that violates the license. You need as many licenses as the number of devices you install it on.
No, that violates the license. Remote Desktop also counts as one device, so you need as many licenses as the number of connections.
No. For details, see the software license agreement.
